Sometimes we feel as though once we’ve hit adulthood, we’ve already passed the best days of our lives – or, as some people call it, “peaked.” I’m here to tell you that that’s not the case! Even though your 21st birthday may have been your last “exciting” birthday, or you might have graduated from your alma mater a few years ago at this point and are looking nostalgically back towards your wild college years, there are many milestones to look forward to in your adult life.
A milestone is a significant event that has changed your life and we have experienced many of them: getting a driver’s license, completing school, coming of voting age, turning 21, and more! Of those milestones, we’ve typically experienced all of them at about the same time as our peers. But as we put our adult hats on, our milestone timelines often differentiate from those of our peers (if they haven’t already). And that is perfectly okay! This is the time of your life to live as what works best for YOU – not for everyone else. So the next time your family asks you when you will get a serious S.O., or when you and your S.O. will get married, or when you will have kids, calmly remind yourself that there is no pressure to make a milestone happen. They will happen when it’s right for you in your life. (It might be a different story if they’re asking you when you’ll get off their couch, but otherwise it is your life and you should live it how you want to)!
So, without further ado, here are some potential milestones to look forward to as an adult (in no specific order):
Remember, a milestone is a milestone because you make it so. A set timeline doesn’t need to exist, especially with everyone leading different lives. Feel genuinely happy for your peers and for yourself, and rest assured that you will experience your personal milestones when they are best for you.
